Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment through which the colored organic and inorganic materials existing in the enamel structure on the teeth surface are removed with teeth whitening gels. The whitening procedure is conducted by putting a gel, which is particularly prepared for this procedure, on the teeth and accelerating the reaction with a light source or laser. The materials causing the discoloration on teeth are replaced with colorless materials and the whitening occurs.

How does an internal discoloration occur?

Internal discolorations are the stains that penetrate inside the tooth and cannot be removed through brushing. Smoking and coloring drinks such as tea and coffee may cause internal discolorations as well as causing external discoloration. The structural imperfections during the formation of teeth (caused by medications or excess fluoride intake, etc.) may also cause internal discoloration. Bleaching procedure has a high level of achievement in the majority of these kinds of cases.

Is Teeth Whitening (Bleaching) the same thing as scaling?

No, it is not. The bleaching procedure consists of lightening the main color of a clean and stainless tooth. Scaling (détartrage) is cleaning the tartar and stains accumulated on and between the teeth. In other words, scaled teeth may be clean but yellow-colored. These clean and yellow-colored teeth are whitened through the bleaching procedure.

Is Teeth Whitening (Bleaching) harmful?

The teeth whitening procedure has no proven damage to teeth except for a temporary sensitivity problem lasting for 1-2 days.

Do the teeth return to their previous color after Bleaching?

The result obtained after a teeth whitening procedure may remain the same until two years. The discoloration will return in a shorter time if there is an overconsumption of tea, coffee, and red wine, smoking, and poor care.

Can cigarette users receive bleaching treatment?

People who smoke cigarettes are not prevented from receiving teeth whitening treatment. However, the period of permanence of the obtained color will be shorter compared to the other patients receiving whitening treatment.

Does bleaching damage the teeth? Will my dental fillings and crowns be affected?

The teeth whitening procedure does not cause any harm to teeth. Bleaching cannot be applied on crowns since it has no effect on the color of the porcelain crowns (coverings). Dental fillings, on the other hand, only cover a certain area of the teeth, so the color of the fillings remains the same while the teeth structure whitens. For this reason, dental fillings may be retouched in order to be in conformity with the new color following the bleaching procedure.

How long does a bleaching procedure take?

A teeth whitening procedure conducted by a dentist in a clinic is completed within 45 minutes or 1 hour based on the type of whitening agent. In case the desired outcome is not achieved, the procedure is repeated after a week.
