Smile design, also colloquially known as “Hollywood smile design”, is a body of procedures through which the most ideal smile for a person is aimed to be achieved by aesthetically bringing the teeth into conformity with the mouth and face. Patients’ teeth are considered along with the whole facial area during the smile design process. The characteristic traits, sex, age, facial features, and expectations of the patient must be considered during the stage of planning.
The main purpose of the rehearsal session is to give the patient an opportunity to approve and accept the smile design and express the unapproved points and to change and fix those points as demanded. The minor changes can be performed during the same session while the session may require to be repeated in a new appointment for the major changes.
The aesthetic appearance and function of the patient are perfected through the smile design. Moreover, the smile design gives the patient self-confidence. The function, on the other hand, brings the chewing process, which is the first stage of nutrition, to an ideal status.
The smile design treatment is usually completed in 3 sessions depending on the procedures to be conducted. You continue your life with your new smile within 7-10 days in total.
The treatment is usually performed through multidisciplinary approaches by planning the surgical, prosthesis, and gum procedures separately or together.
A smile design is permanent. However, the patient has to consider oral and dental health care and must not forget the check-ups in order to extend the period of permanence.
A gummy smile occurs when there is an excessive gum tissue display over the upper teeth as the person smiles. Gums must not be displayed or must be displayed at 1-2 mm in male persons during the smile. In female persons, on the other hand, gums must be displayed at 2 mm. Gum display excessing these rates (4 mm and more) cause excessive gum tissue display and this adversely affects the smile aesthetic. If you believe that you have a gummy smile, it is best for you to consult your dentist before deciding which treatment is better for you.
There are a few different treatment methods to correct a gummy smile and create a more balanced gum/tooth proportion. These methods include gum surgery, crown lengthening, orthognathic surgery, lip repositioning, and Botox. Finding the best treatment for you majorly depends on the reason for the gummy smile.
Gingivectomy: This procedure reshapes your excessive gums in order to reveal the natural shape of your teeth. A nice balance is created between the shortened gums and lengthened teeth.
Lip repositioning: This procedure is used in the type of smile caused by a short or hyperactive upper lip displaying excessive gums when you smile. It is a simple and safe procedure limiting the contraction of the muscles in your upper lip.
Crown lengthening: In this procedure, the excessive gum tissue and the underlying bone are cut and the whole length of your teeth is revealed, so a more balanced smile is achieved.
Orthognathic surgery: This method of treatment is a surgical procedure applied when the upper jaw is longer compared to the lower jaw. The upper jaw is properly reshaped and fitted into a new position decreasing the amount of gum displayed when you smile.
Botox: This is the most protective and short-term way of dealing with a gummy smile. Botox acts as a mechanism causing temporary paralysis of some muscles to limit their movement of lifting your upper lip excessively. Although this method is cheaper and faster than surgery, it is only effective for a few months. Botox must be frequently renewed for long-term results. If you want a permanent surgical solution but wish to envisage the results, you can receive a Botox treatment before the surgery and when you are ensured of the results, you can receive surgical treatment.
